The Black Screen
When it's ON
When my portable work station, a smart phone is on, it can do many things. I can say almost everything I need.
In terms of the practice of art making, it has allowed me to capture not only the moments of daily lives but also the images and happenings inside of the screen.

Being equipped with art-making tool, a camera with the phone, we expand the ways how we perceive the world and ourselves. Also the platform of archiving and showing our art, in other words, the daily lives, is open to everyone as a form of SNS or photo album.
And of course, it also helps us to see where we are.

When it's OFF

Kazimir Malevich, Black Square, 1923, State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia |
When it's off, it becomes a black rectangle.
It does not contain any images or information that used to be shown on the screen as Black Square by Malevich does.
However it is not the absolute blackness that any images or information can be seen. The recent traces of finger prints are archived and the live reflections of events are projected on the surface of the screen.

a reflection on the surface it still helps me to see myself when it's off |
It still contains the information and images of its user and surroundings even when it's off. It does not absorb its surroundings like Malevich's Black Square does but reflect.
As I am very used to recording and documenting things, I wanted to capture the surface of the phone but that's the one of few things it cannot do : capturing its own surface.
In order to capture the surface of the screen, other image capturing tool(s) are needed. The black surface cannot be captured once the phone is on. When the phone is on and want to take its own selfie, also it needs help from other tools such as mirror (and never be able to take a selfie when it's in the state of a black screen).
I commend you for how you documented the process and how the inquiry produced outcomes. Great to see.
