(HW)3-4 Artist(s) Working with Social Media

There are many artists today use social media very extensively to make their works exhibited on numerous online venues. Being documented, posted, blogged, twitted and re-twitted become important strategies for artists (especially emerging and young artists).
images pop up when google "Tino Sehgal" :
his own images and "the official documentations"
Differently from this trend, Tino Sehgal makes situations that are not allowed to be documented without the permission or special circumstances. This restriction on documentation, Tino argues, to makes people experience the moments and situations as they are.
This restriction makes his works more tempting to go to watch in person or imagine(another good strategy to bring audiences to the galleries and museums). His restriction of images of his works on social media and digital world makes his works more distinguishable. Interestingly, there are much of his images and documentations online (since nothing can really block people from the desire to document the moments, un-official documentations are uploaded and circulated online), and his agenda make them special.
He uses his own images instead of the documented images of his works for official interviews, etc, which makes him as a representation and iconic of his works, even he is not the one who performs in his works.
With the strategy against the nature of social media, he makes the characters of his works and his agenda clearer and more attractive. Not corporating with social media but still being on social media as much as other artists with his own images and "the official documentations", he succeeded to bring up the discursive consciousness and questions about the relation between social media and art experiences. Maybe I can say that he plays with social media rather than works with them.

  1. That's quite interesting a choice and unexpected, since he takes a clear stance opposite of social media. I am glad you use him as an example so we can all look at a wider gamut of viewpoints.

    1. Yes that's the point I thought he would be an interesting artist to think about with social media. He takes the strategy to play with social media by being against them. And by doing this, he brings the power back to him to control the images/representations of himself and his works on media, which is opposite for many cases today.
