(OA)4-2 & 3 Revisit Digital Painting Explorations and Lesson Plan Ideas

When I look back the process of my digital painting, it was more like the process of automatic drawing as I was not planning what to make in the beginning but just let it started. And when I saw others, it has more variety to explore. Next time, I might be clear with my attitude at the beginning to see how it leads me. For example, going for automatic drawings (but with more awareness of it), collecting images in advance to play with, thinking about certain themes or concepts, make some rules for myself what I can do and what I cannot do, working with moving version of digital painting (as Ava and Nina did, and Carrianna suggested) etc.

Lesson Plan Ideas

There are so many options to start with, so I think it is essential to set what would be the beginning point unless the goal of the class is exploring what one wants to do with digital tools.

My lesson of digital painting is inspired by the fact that the digital painting can be easily copied, reproduced and retouched. Also "History" function let us see the process more easily.

1. Starting with images
All students start with one image and see how they come up with different ways of manipulating and creating the outcome.

2. Swap the painting
After certain exploration, students can swap their works and start working on other's outcome. One good thing about digital painting is it can be easily copied and reproduced (or undo) so even another student transforms your drawing awful, it won't hurt.

3. Step 2 continued(depends on the numbers of students or time allocated)
Painting can be swapped so students can see and track its changes.

Expectation: To explore how each student works differently to the same image, how each reacts to others paintings, what the transformation of one image would through the process, and how this process would make students think about working individually and collaboratively in digital painting.

(OA)4-1 Revisit Homework and Comment

I made comments on

1. Teny's [HW 3-4] Social Media Artist Miltos Manetas
Teny, thank you for sharing this! I really enjoyed reading the manifesto which I think fascinating that it is even written in late 1990s. It is challenging to me to play video games as I am not good at understanding its scheme or structure, and it causes stress which is the opposite to the intention of many games. Have you played a game called "Journey"? It more focuses on enjoying the moments of looking at beautiful scenes rather than killing monsters to go to next stages. I think there are more of this kind of games today, which changes how we see and experience games, as Miltos experimented almost twenty years ago.

2. Hannah's HW3.4.2 Social Media Artist Research: Brian Piana
Hi Hannah, Thank you for introducing this artist. I like the fact that he produced the program and let the contents filled from the social media sources. I think recent phenomenon of art engaging to technology tends to provide a system with few conditions (in this case, twitter and the word "me") but left contents open. It is a shift on how we make things (one creator and several audiences to several creators-audiences), and how we try to be collaborative.

3.  Gina's HW 2.2 On/Off Experiment

Hi Gina, it is nice to revisit your project after sharing it in the class. When I think about why I need technology is because other people have it and I cannot participate if I don't have it. In this sense, having technology is another way of being in community today. In other words, if others do not have technology, I also do not need it? By the way, I want to comment on your experience being without technology for two years. When I was traveling to Africa, Mongolia or some other countries where the Internet connections were not yet established, I remember myself more focusing on observing my surroundings. I had more time to look at inside of mine and outside world, and spend more time with people for sure (maybe it’s because I was traveling though), which I very enjoyed. I appreciate your imagining moment how our daily lives would be like (not in a special circumstance like traveling) without technology.

4. Anita's HW 3/3 Research Artist: Jorge Colombo
Anita, thank you for sharing your curiosity and thought on how digital painting will evolve and how to be seen. That's very interesting matter to think. How digital painting can be integrated into the traditional art world or art market? Or would it be segregated and shapes its own?

5. Casey's Homework 3-4: Social Media Artist (Tim Manley)
Hi Casey, his works are pleasurable to see! using social media as a space where to support loving ones and encourage oneself is a such a sweet movement. it makes me think about how we can use social media differently. It is also interesting how he interpreted Cinderella into contemporary media version. thank you for sharing!

6. Ava's Erol Gunduz 3/4
It is interesting to see how Erol is playing with real and virtual site. The 3D printed characters have been never placed in that place for real but made documentation and images are posted and archived on social media platform. This stimulates to think about what would be real and what is the reality we are taking into. thank you for sharing!

7. Nina's 3.4 The Artist Is Kinda Present | An Xiao
Hi Nina, it's interesting how the artist has converted the conditions of being present. it reminds me of some situations that I text someone right next me rather than talking directly. communicating through technology has certain values and different ways of communicating (for example I can use emoji through text which I cannot express in real conversation, etc). Being physical does not mean that the people is really on to communication either so it's good to text to see if that person in the mood of communication. As Douglas pointed out that computers operate decision to decision, choice to choice rather than in time, we might be comforted by this new ways of communication through technology?

It was nice to see what other people in the class has researched, experienced, thought and made. Also exploring others' thoughts, I could find what triggers me more and different ways, which makes me realize again what learning from others mean.

(HW)3-4 Artist(s) Working with Social Media

There are many artists today use social media very extensively to make their works exhibited on numerous online venues. Being documented, posted, blogged, twitted and re-twitted become important strategies for artists (especially emerging and young artists).
images pop up when google "Tino Sehgal" :
his own images and "the official documentations"
Differently from this trend, Tino Sehgal makes situations that are not allowed to be documented without the permission or special circumstances. This restriction on documentation, Tino argues, to makes people experience the moments and situations as they are.
This restriction makes his works more tempting to go to watch in person or imagine(another good strategy to bring audiences to the galleries and museums). His restriction of images of his works on social media and digital world makes his works more distinguishable. Interestingly, there are much of his images and documentations online (since nothing can really block people from the desire to document the moments, un-official documentations are uploaded and circulated online), and his agenda make them special.
He uses his own images instead of the documented images of his works for official interviews, etc, which makes him as a representation and iconic of his works, even he is not the one who performs in his works.
With the strategy against the nature of social media, he makes the characters of his works and his agenda clearer and more attractive. Not corporating with social media but still being on social media as much as other artists with his own images and "the official documentations", he succeeded to bring up the discursive consciousness and questions about the relation between social media and art experiences. Maybe I can say that he plays with social media rather than works with them.

(HW)3-3 Artist(s) Working on Digital Painting/Drawing

Yung Jake is using emoji to create figures of pop culture, mostly celebrities. His usage of emoji is a direct demonstration of visual inputs through daily internet experiences and communication. He uses digital tools and digital platforms extensively to create and show his works.
more images are at https://www.instagram.com/yungjake/?hl=en or google his name. the text-interview is here : http://www.complex.com/style/2015/06/yung-jake-new-identity-june-july-2015

(HW)3-2 Digital Collages

I started from the image of small drawing I made a while ago. Adding colors, manipulating shapes and layers, and putting them together to compose the image, I found the decision-making process on digital painting/drawing is much similar with one of actual painting/drawing.
However one thing very different is the level of manipulation and filters which give much freedom to change images drastically and easily (undo, history and preview help a lot). The order of layers can be rearranged and tested easily as well which would be hard in case of real collage when once all elements are glued. The physicality of real painting and drawing is not a consideration in digital one.

I divided process into two sections to test and experience the similar and different ways of creating and manipulating digital images and hand painting or drawing. In the process 2, the freedom or new feature that digital tools offer are more explored:
   1. using image elements to compose the image
   2. using filters and effects the digital tools have

(HW)3-1 EETIQUES

It shows the community built online is different from the one of real world. One's identity can be also differently shaped online as the relationships can be controlled and managed in different ways.
It is YOU who is in charge of everything you are doing online. They are not anonymous although they look like. They are remained as traces of your behaviors and selections.
It is interesting that not the internet world but the personal screen itself is in the communal realim.  Private laptop or phone are not anymore private.

(HW)2-4 A Piece of Technology

Student ID

It contains my photo, my information as a student, which allows me to access to the institutional facilities.

It is approx. 8.5 X 5.4cm size of the flat plastic which has two sides that one has the photos of part of school building and me, and another has magnetic bar and letters. Letters indicates the expiration date, my name, the year of this semester sticker, card number, and few more numbers and information.

in art class,
- can talk about its decisions on aesthetics such as layout
- can experiment its material
   1. it can cut soft fruits such as banana or avocado
   2. it is a good material to create electrical reactions
   3. it can be used to sweep some dusts on the surface of table
- can think about other forms that can carry the information of ID
