(HW)1-4 Art Institution(s) Focusing on Creative Tech

The Dali Museum

The Dali Museum is, as can be seen in its name, the institution collecting, managing, educating, researching and exhibiting Salvador Dali's works from painting to installation. They curate shows building bridges between Dali's works and ones of other artists or figures.

This museum has not particularly served technology as their main thing however in the recent show, Disney And Dali  : Architects of the Imagination (Jan 23, 2016 - June 12, 2016), they try to provide multi-sensory experiences to visitors. For example, Dali's painting s turn into the immersive environment.

The theme of surrealism makes this combination of traditional medium and technology seamless. Also being converted to the immersive environment, painting opens the door to people to be inside of painting, which was only possible in imagination.

(HW)1-3 Media Artist(s)

Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller

Janet and George are Canadian artists who have presented several types of sound installation using objects, audio, video and surrounding. In several pieces among their works, Walks invite audiences to experience the stroll with audio and most recently with video as well. The audience-participant of Walk can experience walk with the audio instructions what to see and where to go (sometimes the instruction turns into story-telling about the places where the participant-audience is watching).

In the Alter Bahnhof Video Walk (2012, Kassel Documenta (13), Germany), audience-participant checks out the iPod and headphone. And following the sound instruction the headphone, he or she explores the Alther Bahnhof station. As following the instruction, the place where the audience-participant is watching is matched to the places shown on the screen. These same places, one in the real moment and another one on the screen have different time and happenings. For example, as the Documenta happened during the summer, it is hot and sunny in reality yet on the screen, snow falls. There are some similarities between these two such as people pass by or the architecture of the places ; however with different details : some unexpected happenings such as dancers tumbling or dogs barking. This dual experience blurs the boundaries between the reality and the fiction. The daily moments and space become cinematic and each audience-participant can experience own fictional reality.

(HW)1-2 Introduce Myself

Hi, I'm Jihyun who just starts the EdDCT program.
I have been trained as an artist for nearly 20yrs, being skillful at several traditional media and crafts esp. in painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture and book making. However in recent projects I have executed, my main focus has been to situate daily events created by several different media including video, audio, tactual installation, performance, immersive environment, photographs, etc.
I had double majored in Painting and Aesthetics in my undergraduate in Korea, and studied in the Netherlands and the US for my masters where I more concentrated on research and new media based works through the observation about the power dynamics of institutional situations of art.
I have dealt several programs such as Photoshop, InDesign, Final Cut Pro and some audio-generating programs. Also I know basics of Processing, Jitter and Unity. I have collaborated with several media designers to create the interactive and immersive environment, and I am very interested in virtual and augmented reality using the oculus and smartphone.
Through this class, I would love to expose myself to be more familiar with several new media and investigate how technology and art can be incorporated into our daily life.
